With reference to our conversation with Major

Carmichael on Tuesday 18th instant, you will note that the Chief Resident Engineer in paragraph 10 of his general letter No.63 dated the 11th July, asks whether it is our intention to

inspect the railway within the next year or 18 months.

consider that an inspection of the line is desirable, and as

Mr. A.J.Barry, who is fully acquainted with the work, will be

visiting China on other business towards the end of the year,

we would suggest that we be instructed to ask him to inspect

the line on our behalf. You will remember that when Mr. Barry

was in China about 2 years ago he made a similar inspection at

your request. If this suggestion is adopted, it would cost tho
